Different Types of Car Tuning

What’s the difference between chip tuning and ECU remapping?

ECU Remapping (also referred to as engine tuning) and chip tuning both have the same end goal which is to achieve improvements such as more power and torque, better fuel economy, enhanced throttle response and improved overall performance. The main difference between chip tuning and ECU remapping is that chip tuning requires the chip to be physically removed from the vehicle for alterations to be made and is most common on older cars typically made pre 2000. ECU remapping is the more modern approach and can be done via connecting a computer to the car via OBD port or directly to the ECU.

Is car remapping and tuning the same thing?

Car remapping and tuning are often used synonymously, although they refer to distinct procedures. Remapping involves reprogramming your car’s Engine Control Unit (ECU) to optimise performance, whereas tuning encompasses physical modifications to your vehicle’s engine and components.

What is Economy tuning?

Economy tuning is designed to improve the fuel efficiency of a vehicle and is best suited for diesel engines. Counterintuitively, economy tuning is not a slow tune, in fact economy tuning is actually designed to improve power and performance allowing the vehicle to get up to cruising speed & higher gears faster resulting in less time being spent on accelerating which is where the highest amount of fuel is used, of course, the best results can only be achieved combined with an economic driving style.

What are the stages of engine tuning?

Whilst stages are not a universal standard of tuning, and no two tuners will necessarily give you the same thing for each “stage” of tuning. A general guide is that a stage represents a set of upgrades fitted to a car.
As you might expect, a ‘stage’ is how far you’ve gone with your tuning upgrades.

Car tuning – Stage One

In Short, stage one tuning might be considered to be upgrades conducted on a car without mechanical modifications, or perhaps very light upgrades such as a cat-back exhaust or air filter. So a near-stock set up, but now with ECU remapping = Stage 1 tuning.

Car tuning – Stage Two

Stage 2 could be said to represent a more tuned and upgraded car than stage 1. So a car with mechanical as well as software upgrades. Where things can get a bit confusing is that what each “stage” means can vary from car to car, and even from tuner to tuner.

Car tuning – Stage Three

What one tuner considers to be stage 3 on a turbocharged car might be quite different from stage 3 on a normally aspirated car. There is no golden rule of what exactly makes up a Stage 2 or 3 set-up. It will differ from car to car. There are some general rules of thumb though, stage 2 will typically involve some upgraded parts and stage 3 will involve more significant modifications.

Petrol & Diesel Remapping

Can you tune a diesel engine?

Yes, you can tune a diesel engine, and it’s a common practice for enhancing performance, fuel efficiency, and drivability.

What’s the difference between tuning petrol and diesel engines?

When remapping petrol engines, it’s vital to adjust the ECU software to increase air intake and turbo boost, along with advancing ignition timing. This combination enhances combustion, boosting power and torque.

Diesel engines differ as they depend on compression rather than spark plugs for igniting the air-fuel mix. Remapping them involves altering software settings to introduce more fuel earlier and increase turbo boost sooner in the rev range, optimising engine output.

Can you remap all petrol and diesel cars?

Most modern vehicles, those manufactured after around 2000 can be remapped. With older models & classic cars remapping might require physical modifications to the chips. This process can involve removing, soldering, or replacing the chips, rather than just updating the software or performing a standard remap.

Cons of Engine Remapping

Voided Warranty

Engine Tuning can void the manufacturer’s warranty on the engine and related components.

Increased Wear and Tear

Enhanced performance can lead to accelerated wear on engine components and other parts of the drivetrain.

Potential for Poor Quality Work

If not done by a professional, ecu remaps can lead to engine damage or reduced reliability, here at Viezu we work to extremely high standards and have warranties & guarantees in place so you know you are in safe hands.

Insurance Implications

Remapped engines often result in higher insurance premiums and must be declared to the insurer.

Legal and Compliance Issues

There may be legal restrictions or compliance issues, especially concerning emissions standards depending on which country you are in and the local laws that apply.

Car Tuning FAQs

Is tuning cars illegal?

Tuning cars in itself is not illegal. However, certain modifications made during the tuning process can render a vehicle non-compliant with road safety standards or emissions regulations, making it illegal to drive on public roads. It’s essential to be aware of and adhere to the legal guidelines specific to your region.

What does tuning do to a car?

Tuning a car involves modifying the engine and other components to improve performance, efficiency, and drivability. This modification can include changes to the Engine Control Unit (ECU) software, enhancing airflow, upgrading exhaust systems, and altering fuel delivery. The result is typically increased power, torque, and a more responsive driving experience.

How much does it cost to tune a car?

The cost of tuning a car varies widely depending on the type of tuning, the specific modifications, the make and model of the car, and the tuner’s expertise. Basic ECU remapping might cost a few hundred pounds, while extensive performance tuning with high-end parts can run into thousands.

How can you tell if a car has been remapped?

Identifying a remapped car isn’t always straightforward without technical inspection. Some indicators include noticeable changes in performance, such as increased acceleration or fuel economy. A diagnostic tool can also be used to read the ECU software for any non-standard configurations.
