Discover the Ins and Outs of the Fuel Injector

Over the past 25 years, there have been numerous changes to automobiles. From satellite navigation and Bluetooth capabilities to an increase in airbags and auto-parking, cars continue to undergo major evolutions. There’s one major change that, while not as flashy as automatic breaking, has been implemented in every U.S. manufactured car since 1990: fuel injection. Fuel injectors are now responsible for delivering gas to your car’s motor—a responsibility that once belonged the carburetor.

Injector upgrades

The benefits of fuel injection include smoother and more consistent transient throttle response, easier cold starting, a more accurate adjustment to changes in temperature and air pressure, more stable idling, decreased maintenance needs, and better fuel efficiency. Fuel injectors also have major environmental benefits, including better fuel efficiency and cleaner exhaust emissions.

So what exactly is a fuel injector? It’s part of the fuel injection system in a car. In order to power the motor, your car needs fuel and oxygen: An air intake delivers the air and the fuel injector system delivers the gas. The fuel injector’s role is to deliver the exact amount of gas the motor needs. Essentially a valve with electronic controls that receive signals from the engine’s computer, the injector sprays the pressurized fuel in a fine mist into the motor’s intake manifold. From there, the fuel is delivered to the engine, where it is mixed with the oxygen to create combustion, which propels the vehicle.

There are two main types of fuel injectors based on the injection system. A mechanical system features an injector that is spring-loaded into the closed position and opened by fuel pressure. An electronic system features a spring-loaded injector that is opened by an electromagnet.

Fuel injectors open and close at the same revolutions per minute (RPM) as the engine—or more than 138,000 times an hour. This high activity rate—and the fuel injector’s importance to your car’s performance—are essential reasons to purchase one from a supplier that guarantees quality and expertise, such as SouthBay Fuel Injectors. Located on Long Island, NY, SouthBay Fuel Injectors is the leading supplier of high performance fuel injectors, OEM fuel injectors and new and rebuilt injectors.
