Porsche Cayman. dyno remap in progress on VIEZU's 3,000bhp four-wheel drive dyno

A dyno remap is an ECU remap that’s tested on a rolling road dynamometer before and after the new tuning file is loaded to your vehicle. The gain is measured and printed for you. At VIEZU, all dyno remaps are written in-house and verified on our own 3,000bhp four-wheel drive dyno at our technical research centre near Stratford-upon-Avon, on the exact car being tuned.

What Is a Dyno Remap?

A dynamometer, or dyno, is a rig that measures the power and torque an engine delivers to the wheels across the rev range. A rolling road dyno does this with the car’s wheels sat on rollers, so the vehicle can be driven under load without leaving the workshop. A dyno remap uses this rig twice: once to record the car’s standard output and again once the new ECU map is written, so the improvement is measured rather than assumed.

A dyno map is different from a remap. The difference is that with a standard remap, a technician can load a tuning file without putting the car on rollers first. A dyno remap is sometimes called a rolling road remap, because the rolling road is the dyno the car sits on during tuning. A dyno remap gives you a printed before-and-after graph specific to your own car, which a standard remap does not.

How Our Dyno Remap Process Works

Baseline Test

Your car goes on VIEZU’s Mustang dyno first so that we have a baseline for the power and torque reaching the wheels on your engine, in its current condition, rather than a generic figure for the model of your car.

Custom ECU Mapping

Our technicians write the map in-house, adjusting many settings within your vehicle’s ECU, including fueling, ignition timing and boost pressure (where applicable) to suit your engine, your fuel and any existing modifications. We don’t load a generic pre-written tuning file.

Dyno-Proven Verification

Your car goes back on the dyno once the new map is loaded. We check the power and torque increase, look for flat spots or misfires and confirm the engine is running safely before you drive away. You also get a before-and-after graph to show the improvements made.

Dyno Remap vs Standard ECU Remap: What’s the Difference?

For most mainstream makes and models, the software behind a Stage 1 remap is close to identical between two examples of the same engine, so a dyno isn’t strictly necessary for every job. A dyno confirms the map is working correctly on your specific car and catches problems a laptop-only remap can miss.

At VIEZU, every remap we write, from a Stage 1 tune to a serious Stage 3 build, is tested and developed using our own dyno before it leaves the workshop.

Petrol and Diesel Dyno Remaps

Diesel engines respond particularly well to remapping. Factory tuning on diesels is set conservatively, so there are real gains available in power, torque and fuel economy. Our diesel tuning includes BlueOptimize, VIEZU’s fuel economy map written and developed by our in-house expert file writing team fitted to over 150,000 vehicles worldwide and winner of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise.

Petrol engines can also deliver substantial gains, especially where turbocharging, supercharging or intercooling is used. These engines often have considerable untapped potential, with a remap improving power, torque, throttle response and mid-range performance. On some applications, the difference can be dramatic. .

Whichever fuel type you’re running, the rolling road remap process stays the same: baseline test, custom-developed calibration, and final verification run to confirm the results.

Benefits of a Dyno Remap

  • More power and torque, measured rather than estimated
  • Better throttle response, with flat spots and hesitation ironed out
  • Improved fuel economy on many tunes, particularly diesel and economy-focused maps
  • A map written for your car, using its own baseline figures
  • A before-and-after dyno graph you keep, showing the measured gain on your car

Can ECU Remapping Damage Your Car's Engine?

Is Dyno Tuning Safe? Risks and How We Manage Them

A poorly executed remap, dyno-tested or not, can cause engine damage, higher emissions or reduced reliability. A safe remap depends more on the skill of the tuner than on the equipment they use.

At VIEZU, every remap is written in-house and tested on our dyno for safety as well as power. All VIEZU remaps are fully reversible: we keep a backup of your car’s original software, so it can be restored to standard settings whenever you need it. We back every remap with a 30-day, no-quibble money-back guarantee, plus a lifetime software guarantee, so if you lose your tuning file through a dealer update or parts failure, we reinstall it free for as long as you own the vehicle.

Two things worth knowing before you book:

  • Most insurers treat a remap as a modification, so you’ll need to tell them, and your premium may change
  • A remap can affect your manufacturer warranty, so check your position before you go ahead

How Much Does a Dyno Remap Cost?

VIEZU prices remaps by stage rather than a flat fee, because the work involved varies. A Stage 1 remap, suited to a standard vehicle with no hardware changes, costs a few hundred pounds. Stage 3 and above, which involves supporting hardware such as a new turbo, can run into several thousand pounds. Our guide to remap stages explains what Stage 1, 2 and 3 each involve.

Dyno Remaps FAQs

Is remapping illegal in the UK?

No, remapping your car’s ECU is legal in the UK. The map needs to keep your vehicle within the legal requirements for road use, including emissions, which is checked as part of your MOT’s environmental standards test. Read more on the legality of car remapping.

What is dyno mapping?

Dyno mapping means the same process as a dyno remap: writing or adjusting the ECU software while the car is on a rolling road dyno, so changes are measured in real time rather than applied blind.

Can any vehicle be dyno remapped?

VIEZU tunes almost all cars, vans and trucks, along with motorhomes, motorbikes, agricultural and plant equipment and marine engines, in both petrol and diesel. A recent dyno day at VIEZU

How long does a dyno remap take?

How long a dyno remap takes completely depends on the work being done. A simple Stage 1 dyno remap can be a few hours but other jobs that require a lot of research and development can be a few days to a week.

Do I need to book in advance for a dyno remap at VIEZU?

Yes, you will need to book your dyno remap in advance so we can ensure that we have availability in our workshop. Times vary from next day to 4 weeks +.
