The history of Catalytic Converters
Catalytic converters were originally introduced in the UK in the early 90s and actually there’s quite a lot of controversy around this because at the time, a bit like VHS video and beta Max there were two main opportunities to reduce the emissions from vehicles. One was lean burn engine technology, the idea behind the lean burn engine runs on much less fuel than a traditional combustion engine. As such, the air fuel ratio is much much higher and they burn quite a lot hotter. In theory achieving 70mpg or more.
The other opportunity to reduce vehicles emissions was catalytic converters unfortunately for many the catalytic converters won the race and all cars from about 1990 depending on where you are based were fitted with catalytic converters. And therefore, sadly the opportunity to have a gasoline engine running 60 or 70 miles per gallon was lost.

How much power will 200 cell catalytic converters give my supercharged Jaguar
A lot of people ask us how much more power they will get if they fit for 200 cell catalytic converters for their car. On a turbocharged engine or vehicle with a supercharger, particularly if it’s been tuned to produce more boost pressure. If you put more air and fuel in, by definition you get more exhaust gases coming out. On modern cars the ECU is permanently measuring for lots of different things to make sure the engine is running in its prime condition. One of the things that it measures is exhaust gas temperatures commonly known as EGT’s.
With an engine fitted with a catalytic converter the ECU is looking to see how quickly the exhaust gases are passing through. If exhaust gases start to back up pressure can build up before the catalytic converter and at this point the EGTs start to get too high. As such the ECU will start to pull power back. However, if you fit a 200 cell catalytic converters to your car the exhaust gases will pass through much quicker. And therefore your EGTs don’t build up and your ECU is able to keep the vehicle at full power.
Independent emission testing and EU approval
When we are choosing 200 cell catalytic converters its important to know they are not all the same. Emission tested and approved parts are a legal requirement in many counties. Many aftermarket cats will not carry an EU approved testing number – it is very important to check before you purchase.
Is size important ?
The other thing to consider when you’re replacing your catalytic converters is the physical size of the cat. You need a cat that is of a size that it really is an upgrade over your stock factory cats. If it’s much smaller, exhaust gas flow will not increase and you will see no performance increase – small 200 cell cats will not deliver the gains you are looking for – They will also struggle to meet emission testing and will burn out and fail much quicker.
