AutoTuner Update: MD1CS004 OBD Support Expanded

AutoTuner have rolled out a key update to their tuning tool, specifically targeting Bosch MD1CS004 ECUs. These are found in a broad range of 2.0L TDI engines across the VAG group, and this new functionality enhances the speed, coverage, and reliability of OBD tuning operations.

For tuning professionals, it’s not just about whether a tool can do a job—it’s about how quickly, how consistently, and how much vehicle coverage can be achieved without unnecessary disruption. This release delivers on all of that.

What’s New in the Update?

The update adds support for additional Cboot versions on MD1CS004 ECUs. This means tuners can now connect and perform OBD VR (Virtual Read) operations on more variants of the ECU, across a wider range of vehicles.

In practice, this reduces the need for BENCH workarounds and enables faster access to tuning files. For tuners dealing with tight workshop schedules, it saves time both in diagnostics and execution, increasing throughput and customer satisfaction.

Faster ECU Identification and Gen2 ECU Filtering

A less obvious—but equally valuable—improvement is the updated detection logic for ECU identification. With the growing number of Gen2 MD1CS004 ECUs appearing in newer VAG vehicles, the ability to flag these unsupported units early in the workflow is a significant benefit.

These Gen2 versions are not currently supported by any tuning tool. Attempting to read or write to these ECUs without realising their type results in wasted time and unnecessary fault-code clearing. This update helps avoid that problem entirely by providing faster, more accurate ECU ID.

Handling of H80 Hardware – What You Need to Know

Another detail worth highlighting is around H80 hardware variants. These versions of the MD1CS004 ECU cannot be tuned via BENCH due to Bosch’s limited service mode. However, AutoTuner now allows access via OBD on these units using a VAG-specific method.

This is particularly useful for workshops that have previously had to turn away certain vehicle types or revert to slower benching strategies. If you’ve previously run into H80 issues, this change alone might be worth revisiting those vehicles.

Supported Vehicles

This update brings enhanced OBD tuning support for the following models:

  • Audi: 30 TDI / 40 TDI (2.0 TDI CR EU6)
  • Cupra: 2.0 TDI CR EU6
  • Volkswagen: 2.0 TDI CR EU6 / EU6.2 / GTD
  • Seat / Skoda: 2.0 TDI CR EU6 / EU6.2
  • Ford: 2.0 EcoBlue

ECU Performance Specs

For those needing technical reference, here are the current OBD performance benchmarks with the new update:

  • Readout: Virtual Read via OBD
  • MCU: TC298
  • Write Time (including unlocking): ~6 minutes
  • Write Time (post-unlock): ~2 minutes
  • Checksum Correction: Enabled
  • Back to Stock Function: Available

These figures reflect real-world workshop performance, not theoretical lab speeds.

FAQ: What You Need to Know About the Update

Do I need to buy new hardware?

No. This update is part of AutoTuner’s ongoing firmware and software development. If you’ve already got the tool, the new capabilities are available via the usual update process.

Can I now tune all MD1CS004 ECUs?

No. Gen2 MD1CS004 ECUs are still not tuneable by any tool on the market. However, AutoTuner can now identify them early in the process to avoid wasted time.

Is BENCH still required for some MD1CS004 ECUs?

Yes, in some cases. While OBD access has been expanded, not every MD1CS004 ECU is covered. In particular, H80 variants cannot be accessed via BENCH, but they can now be handled via OBD.

Will this work on all 2.0 TDI engines?

Only those fitted with supported MD1CS004 ECUs, and only if they match the supported Cboot versions. If in doubt, it’s worth doing a quick ECU ID check with AutoTuner before proceeding.
